~1981~

CM140

The first "real nice" guitar that I ever owned is this CM140 that I ordered new in 1981.

Specifications

The Construction:

Neck: Eastern Hard Rock Maple (glue in type)
Body: Eastern Hard Rock Maple
Fingerboard:
Ebony Fingerboard with mother-of-pearl block inlays

The Electronics:

Pickups: Two Carvin M22 humbuckers with a 3-way selector. The pickups are wired in stereo which allows separating each pickup into it's own amplifier if desired.
Controls: One volume and one tone control for each pickup
Other Options: A coil splitter for each pickup and a phase switch

Modifications:

In the mid 80's, Carvin started offering the locking Kahler vibrato assemblies as an option. So, seeing how it WAS the 80's, I had to have a wammy on my ax.  So, I sent my guitar back to California to have a Kahler Pro vibrato and locking nut retrofitted.

In 1994, I replaced the knobs,  switches and pickups with modern versions of the same parts.

The all-maple construction makes for a punchy guitar sound.  Over the years, the maple's brightness has softened some to a full, resonant tone with lots of depth.

The dual outputs shown in the photo above allow for stereo separation of the pickups.  Using only the jack closest to the bottom end of the guitar allows the guitar to be played in normal mono mode.  If both jacks are used, the pickups are separated, each going into it's own amplifier.

Shown above is the venerable Kahler Pro with the "heavy spring" option.  This is a cam-actuated unit that is remarkably stable.  The Kahler Pro is challenged only by the Original Floyd Rose in terms of tuning stability.  Note the black stainless-steel bridge rollers.

The Kahler vibrato is no longer manufactured.   CLICK HERE for setup/maintenance information.

Oooh... inlays! The Carvin logo and trapezoid headstock inlays are made from select mother of pearl.  Also shown are the ultra-smooth Schaller M6 "mini" tuning keys.
